Northern Saw-whet Owl, Wintering Study, Battaly, et al.

Pelham Bay, Feb 2010

Day 1:  Just Banded
Northern Saw-whet Owls winter in  the coastal woodland habitat at Pelham Bay Park in New York City.   Just released, this owl, a first winter female, pauses briefly before taking cover in the conifers.  Her activities will contribute to a better understanding of roost site preferences and local movements.
Day 12:  Mouse in Talons

This Saw-whet was seen at 5:20 in the afternoon, after spending the day roosting in the conifers.  We believe she was preparing for sunset and the hunting activities of the night.
