Hook Mountain Hawk Watchers!
1971-2012
Get Yourself Counted as a Hook Mountain Hawk Watcher

On Sep 18, 2013 we counted our 500,000th hawk at Hook!  Wow, what an accomplishment that is !  On that day, Steve, Linda, Denise, and Nancy were waiting for the next hawk.  Steve, keeping the numbers for the day, knew it would be the record hawk.  When they saw a kettle of Broadwings "over New York City", Steve called out:

  "That's it!  The 500,000th hawk !"

It was late in the day and others had left, but they and every one of you contributed to the 500,000th.
It is no surprise that the big record was a Broad-winged Hawk;  BWs account for 61% of the 20 raptor species we have counted over the years.

Since Hook started in 1971 with 7067 hawks, many people have helped us find and count hawks.   We reached 50,000 hawks in 1975, and 100,000 in 1978.  We have generally added about 100,000 hawks per decade:  reaching 200,000 in 1985, 300,000 in 1993, and 400,000 in 2001.

Our history is documented in the number of hawks we have counted.  But we do not have any readily available documentation of you, our wonderful hawk watchers.  Beginning now, I hope to correct that, by compiling a list of all the many people who have helped us find hawks at Hook Mountain.

If you have watched hawks at Hook, please complete the following form:
1.   Enter Your Name
2.  Enter the year you first started watching hawks at Hook.
3.  If you ever completed a report form, recording the count for a day, place an X in the counter box.
4.  If you do NOT want your name published on-line, place an X  in the DO NOT POST box .
I will make a complete list of watchers available in the book up on Hook
.  This will include all who complete the form.
I will also post the list on-line.  This will include only those who want their names posted.

Thank You Everyone!  You are the Greatest!
